Firm Profile

Edmund Norton founded the firm in Lowestoft in the early 1830’s.  Initially, the firm practiced from addresses in the town’s High Street.  In 1892 the firm moved to its present location, then known as Ivy Cottage.  The partnership gained its former name, Norton Peskett & Forward when William Bryan Forward joined Frank Peskett in the practice shortly after the First World War.  From the early 1920’s until 1948 Mr Forward was a sole practitioner, assisted by two longer serving Clerks.

Peter Cooper joined Mr Forward in the practice in 1948.  Peter Cooper practiced for many years with Derek Adkinson.  Peter Cooper retired in 1987 and Derek Adkinson in 1993 when he was replaced as Senior Partner by Anthony Ambrose.  Since the early 1970’s the firm has expanded considerably and now has a staff in excess of one hundred in six offices in Lowestoft, Beccles, Gorleston, Great Yarmouth and Southwold.  On 1st January 1996 the firm changed its name to Norton Peskett.

Our approach to clients is friendly and efficient.  The client will be made to feel welcome but also confident that his or her legal affairs will be dealt with in a businesslike and competent manner.  The practice has a large private-client base developed by the Partners over many years, in addition the firm has a well respected Criminal Law Practice.  However, in recent years the Commercial and Litigation aspects of the practice have been developed, together with Family Law to give a broader based and more balanced approach to the way in which legal services are provided to the Community.

The strategy of the practice has been to centre its operations in Lowestoft, with branch offices in Beccles, Gorleston, Great Yarmouth and Southwold.
